In football, clubs predate national teams and, for most fans, still matter more. The World Cup arrives once every four years, but a club returns every week, and that rhythm has pulled the history of cities, class, migration and industry directly into the game. The twelve clubs below were not chosen by trophy count alone — the list also weighs how much each one changed the way football is played, watched and owned.

Unless noted otherwise, statistics are current through the end of the 2024-25 season. "Continental cup titles" means the European Cup/Champions League for European clubs and the Copa Libertadores for South American clubs. "Intercontinental Cup/Club World Cup" combines wins in the old Intercontinental Cup (1960-2004), contested between the European and South American champions, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
