Major honours
Founded in 1880 as the church team St Mark's, the club took its current name in 1894. It spent most of the 20th century in the shadow of neighbouring Manchester United and dropped as low as the third tier in 1998-99. The turning point came with Sheikh Mansour's Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008. Since then, the club has built out not only its playing squad but its training facilities, data department, and City Football Group, a network of sister clubs spanning five continents that has become the template for multi-club ownership. Pep Guardiola, appointed in 2016, established inverted full-backs and a 3-2-5 attacking shape, guiding City to the Premier League's first 100-point season in 2017-18 and the first-ever four consecutive English top-flight titles from 2020-21 to 2023-24. In 2022-23, City beat Inter 1-0 in Istanbul to add a first Champions League title and complete the treble. Separately, an independent hearing into more than 100 alleged financial-rule breaches brought by the Premier League remains ongoing.

Rivalry
The Manchester Derby against Manchester United flipped the balance of power in 2011-12, when City won a first league title in 44 years on goal difference after Agüero's stoppage-time winner in the final match. The 2023 FA Cup final was the first time the two clubs had met in that competition, with City winning 2-1.
