Major honours
Founded in Amsterdam in 1900, Ajax is the definitive example of a club that changed world football through ideas rather than spending power. Total Football, perfected by manager Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff, replaced fixed positions with constant interchange of position and a high offside line, and carried Ajax to three straight European Cups from 1971 to 1973. In 1995, Louis van Gaal's side — built around homegrown players including the De Boer brothers, Kluivert, Davids, Seedorf and Overmars — beat Milan 1-0 in Vienna for a fourth title. Ajax's real product has always been players and coaches rather than trophies. Its youth system, De Toekomst, has fed Europe's top leagues for half a century, and after the 1995 win the Bosman ruling formalised the outflow of talent, pushing the club toward a develop-and-sell model. That model reached its peak in 2018-19, when Ajax beat Juventus and Real Madrid back to back on the way to the Champions League semi-final. As of 2024-25, its 36 Eredivisie titles are the most in the Netherlands.

Rivalry
De Klassieker against Rotterdam's Feyenoord is built on the contrast between the commercial capital and a working port city, and has long been so intense that away fans are barred from attending. The rivalry with PSV Eindhoven is the more direct title race.
