Major honours
Founded in 1908 by a breakaway faction within Milan that objected to restrictions on signing foreign players — hence the name Internazionale. Under manager Helenio Herrera in the 1960s, "Grande Inter" paired a sweeper-based catenaccio with the overlapping runs of left-back Giacinto Facchetti, winning back-to-back European Cups in 1964 and 1965. Inter takes pride in being the only major Italian club never relegated to Serie B. In 2009-10, José Mourinho's side won Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League to complete Italian football's first treble, with the second leg of the semi-final — held with ten men against Guardiola's Barcelona — becoming an emblem of that era's defensive football. As of 2024-25, Inter has 20 Serie A titles and has reached two Champions League finals since, losing to Manchester City in 2023 and Paris Saint-Germain in 2025.

Rivalry
The Derby della Madonnina against Milan is one of football's most literal derbies, given that the split that created Inter happened from within Milan itself. The Derby d'Italia against Juventus, an old rivalry between two northern industrial cities, became Italy's most politically charged fixture after the 2006 Calciopoli ruling.
