Major honours
Founded in 1899 by the Englishman Herbert Kilpin and others as the Milan Cricket and Football Club, it has kept the English spelling "Milan" over the Italian ever since. Two golden eras define the club. The first came under Nereo Rocco in the 1960s, when Milan beat Benfica 2-1 at Wembley in 1963 to become the first Italian club to win the European Cup. The second arrived in the late 1980s after Silvio Berlusconi's takeover, under manager Arrigo Sacchi, whose Milan abandoned man-marking for a compact 4-4-2 zonal press with a high offside trap, winning back-to-back European Cups in 1989 and 1990 while fielding the Dutch trio of Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard alongside the defensive line of Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta and Tassotti. Under the following Fabio Capello regime, Milan went 58 Serie A matches unbeaten from 1991 to 1993. As of 2024-25, its seven European Cup/Champions League titles rank second only to Real Madrid.

The Derby della Madonnina against Inter, who share San Siro, is one of the few derbies in the world played with no clear home or away side. In the 2022-23 Champions League semi-final the two sides met for the first time in the competition, with Inter winning 3-0 on aggregate.
