Founded in 1900, Bayern was not even among the founding members when the Bundesliga launched in 1963. Its history since promotion has effectively been the history of German football itself. Led by Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and goalkeeper Sepp Maier, Bayern won three straight European Cups from 1974 to 1976, and on the domestic front set a Big Five league record with eleven consecutive Bundesliga titles from 2012-13 to 2022-23. As of 2024-25 its 33 Bundesliga titles put it more than twenty clear of the next club. Its governance is the most conservative among Europe's superclubs: member ownership combined with Germany's 50+1 rule blocks outside takeover, the club has long prided itself on operating debt-free, and it routinely folds retired players such as Rummenigge and Hoeneß into its executive ranks. A year after losing the 2012 Champions League final on home soil to Chelsea on penalties, Bayern beat Dortmund 2-1 under Jupp Heynckes to complete the treble.

Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund became Germany's biggest box-office fixture through the 2010s, and the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley was the first all-German final in the competition's history. Bayern's repeated habit of signing Dortmund's best players has only deepened the bitterness.
