Founded in 1905 by the children of Italian immigrants in the La Boca port district of Buenos Aires, the club has kept the blue and yellow it borrowed, according to legend, from the flag of a ship docked in the harbour. Its home ground, La Bombonera, is famous for an asymmetric design with one nearly vertical stand that physically shakes when fans jump, generating a volume out of proportion to its capacity of roughly 54,000. Boca's record on the continental stage ranks among the best in South America. As of 2024-25 it has won the Copa Libertadores six times and the Intercontinental Cup three times, adding to back-to-back continental titles in 1977 and 1978 a further three under manager Carlos Bianchi in 2000, 2001 and 2003. In the 2000 Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo, two goals from Martín Palermo beat Real Madrid 2-1, and in 2003 Boca beat Milan on penalties. Diego Maradona played for the club in 1981 and again from 1995 to 1997.

The Superclásico against River Plate has long symbolised the class divide between a working port district and the wealthy north, and an estimated 70 percent of Buenos Aires residents identify with one club or the other. The two sides met in a Copa Libertadores final for the first time in 2018.
