The most decorated franchise across North America's four major pro sports. Born in Baltimore in 1901, the club moved to New York in 1903 and remade itself by buying Babe Ruth from Boston in 1920. Since its first World Series title in 1923 it has piled up 27 championships and 41 American League pennants — sixteen more titles than second-place St. Louis. Dynasties stack on dynasties: Ruth and Lou Gehrig's 1927 Murderers' Row, four straight from 1936 to 1939, five straight under Casey Stengel from 1949 to 1953, and four titles between 1996 and 2000 built around Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. The nameless pinstripe uniform, more than twenty retired numbers and Monument Park in the outfield are brands in themselves. The new Yankee Stadium opened in 2009 across the street from the old one, carrying over name and ritual, and still drew more than 3.3 million home fans in 2024 — second in the league.

Rivalry

The feud with the Boston Red Sox began with the 1920 Ruth sale and became the oldest and most-broadcast rivalry in the sport. Allowing a 3–0 American League Championship Series lead to slip into a 4–3 loss in 2004 remains the most painful chapter in Yankees history.
