A founding National League member in 1876 and the only club still in that league continuously since. The 1906 team won 116 games — still unbroken — and titles followed in 1907 and 1908; then came the longest championship drought in North American sports history, 108 years, with seven further pennants through 1945 but no World Series. Theo Epstein's rebuild ended it when Chicago beat Cleveland 8–7 in ten innings in Game 7 of 2016. Career totals: three World Series, seventeen NL pennants, eleven World Series appearances. Wrigley Field, opened in 1914, is defined by its ivy outfield wall, hand-operated scoreboard and lights installed only in 1988, and still draws more than 2.8 million a season regardless of the standings.

Rivalry

The division rivalry with the St. Louis Cardinals is the oldest in the National League. Inside Chicago, interleague games against the White Sox split the city north–south every year.
