Founded in Boston in 1871, via Milwaukee, settling in Atlanta in 1966 — the longest continuously operating franchise in American pro sport. It has won a title in each city: Boston's Miracle Braves of 1914, Milwaukee's 1957 win over the Yankees with Hank Aaron and Warren Spahn, and Atlanta titles in 1995 and 2021. What defines the club is durability more than count. Under Bobby Cox, with the Maddux–Glavine–Smoltz rotation, Atlanta won fourteen straight division titles from 1991 to 2005 (skipping only the strike-shortened 1994) — unmatched in North American pro sport. From 1976 Ted Turner's TBS beamed games nationwide and earned the nickname "America's Team." Truist Park, opened in 2017, is a textbook mixed-use ballpark development.

Rivalry

In the 1990s the New York Mets were the annual division foil; in the 2020s that role has passed to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East.
