Founded in 1881, the world's first national tennis organization is today the largest non-profit revenue engine in the sport. It staged the US National Championship at Newport, Rhode Island in its inaugural year — the event that became the US Open, the second-oldest major after Wimbledon. The USTA's defining trait is that one body runs elite events and mass participation alike. It owns the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows and runs the US Open itself; the National Campus in Lake Nona, Orlando, opened in 2017 with roughly 100 courts for junior and college tennis. The 2025 US Open offered a record $90 million total player purse — a scale this structure makes possible. Thirty-two Davis Cup and 18 Billie Jean King Cup titles are both all-time records, and a world No. 1 lineage from Connors, McEnroe, Evert, Navratilova, Sampras, Agassi and the Williams sisters has no national peer. The long-standing homework: no American man has won a major singles title since Andy Roddick in 2003.

In Davis Cup Challenge Round play of the 1950s and 60s, the United States and Australia effectively split the trophy between them, meeting in the final almost every year. Their combined 60 titles exceed the rest of the world put together.
