Founded in 1920, the French Tennis Federation owns the sport's most valuable real estate. Stade Roland Garros in Paris's 16th arrondissement was built in 1928 so the "Four Musketeers" could defend the Davis Cup they had seized from the United States in 1927 — and it has hosted the French Open ever since. The FFT opened Court Simonne Mathieu inside the greenhouse gardens in 2019 and added a retractable roof to Court Philippe Chatrier in 2020 as part of a full-site overhaul. Men's results peaked long ago: six of ten Davis Cup titles came in the Musketeer era of 1927–1932, and no French man has won a major singles title since Yannick Noah at Roland Garros in 1983. Amélie Mauresmo reached world No. 1 in 2004 and won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006. The Billie Jean King Cup came in 1997, 2003 and 2019. With roughly one million registered players, it is France's largest individual-sport governing body.
