Major honours
It began in 1904 as the Australasian Lawn Tennis Association and staged the first Australasian Championship the following year — today's Australian Open. The golden age ran from 1950 to 1967: Australia won the Davis Cup 15 times in those 18 years, and under Harry Hopman, Sedgman, Hoad, Rosewall, Laver, Emerson and Newcombe rose to the top in succession. On operations, it has made the boldest calls. Leaving grass at Kooyong for hard courts at Melbourne Park in 1988 instantly expanded the draw; with retractable roofs on Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena, it is the only major that can run three show courts simultaneously through rain or heat. The 2025 event drew more than 1.2 million spectators over two weeks, a tournament record. Margaret Court's 24 major singles titles, Evonne Goolagong's seven, and Rod Laver's two calendar Grand Slams all came through this program. Ash Barty's 2022 Australian Open title was a home singles win after 44 years.
