Major honours
Founded in 1888, the LTA governs the country where the sport's rules were written — yet does not own its most famous tournament. Wimbledon is run by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, founded in 1868; the LTA receives surplus from the Championships for domestic development. The National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, opened in 2007, anchors elite training. Results split sharply: nine of ten Davis Cup titles came before 1936; Fred Perry's 1936 Wimbledon win was followed by a 77-year wait until Andy Murray lifted the same trophy in 2013. Ann Haydon-Jones (1969) and Virginia Wade (1977) won Wimbledon among the women. Murray is the only player to defend Olympic singles gold (2012 and 2016), and in 2015 he won every match he played — 11 in all — to deliver Britain's first Davis Cup in 79 years. A Billie Jean King Cup title remains elusive.
