Founded in 1902, the DTB counts more than a million members and ranks among the world's largest tennis organizations. The German International Championships at Hamburg Rothenbaum, running since 1892, is one of Europe's oldest clay events. The mid-1980s produced two era-defining players at once: Boris Becker won Wimbledon unseeded at 17 in 1985, then the youngest men's champion; Steffi Graf completed the calendar Grand Slam plus Seoul Olympic gold in 1988 — the only Golden Slam in history across both draws. Their boom translated to teams: Davis Cup titles in 1988, 1989 and 1993; Fed Cup wins in 1987 and 1992. After a long lull, Angelique Kerber won the Australian Open and US Open and reached No. 1 in 2016; Alexander Zverev took Olympic singles gold in Tokyo 2021. Gottfried von Cramm, hero of the 1937 Davis Cup epic, remains the federation's oldest legend.
