Winged Foot is a private club in Westchester County, New York, and A.W. Tillinghast's signature work. Members of the New York Athletic Club founded it in 1923 with East and West courses; championships are always played on the West. Par 70 at roughly 7,480 yards, with narrow fairways, greens that pitch front to back and severe run-offs, missed approaches tumble into difficult lies in deep rough. It has hosted six U.S. Opens; the 1974 edition, won at seven-over 287, was called the 'Massacre at Winged Foot,' and in 2006 Phil Mickelson double-bogeyed the last hole to hand Jeff Ogilvy the title. At the 2020 Open, Bryson DeChambeau won at six-under 274 as the only player under par, announcing the power-golf era.
