Major honours
Augusta National is the most powerful private club in golf. Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts bought a former nursery, designed the course with Alister MacKenzie and opened in 1933; the first tournament followed a year later. The Masters is the only major owned by its host club, which selects the field by invitation, and from 1934 through 2025 it has been played 89 times, interrupted only three years by war. The course is par 72 at roughly 7,550 yards, defended by glassy greens and severe slopes rather than heavy rough. Amen Corner — holes 11 through 13 — was named by Herbert Warren Wind in 1958, and the spring ritual of the previous champion helping the new winner into a green jacket has become the tournament's signature. The lowest winning score is Dustin Johnson's 268 in 2020; since 2019 the club has also hosted the Augusta National Women's Amateur.
