Major honours
Pebble Beach is the world's most famous public course. Amateur golfers Jack Neville and Douglas Grant laid it out along the cliffs of the Monterey Peninsula in 1919; holes 4 through 10 and 17 and 18 hug the Pacific, where ocean breeze and bluffs become hazards themselves. The 106-yard par-3 7th can demand anything from a wedge to a 5-iron depending on wind, and the 543-yard par-5 18th, with the entire left side open to the sea, is golf's most celebrated closing hole. Par 71 at roughly 7,075 yards, it is short for a major venue but small greens demand precise approaches. It has hosted six U.S. Opens, the 1977 PGA Championship and the 2023 U.S. Women's Open, and every February the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am lets ordinary golfers play the same turf for a green fee.

It is always measured against Cypress Point next door. Cypress Point is an ultra-private club with a few hundred members; Pebble Beach is open to anyone who pays the fee — two opposite golf philosophies sharing the same coastline.
