Major honours
Oakmont is widely regarded as America's sternest championship course. Steel magnate Henry Fownes built it near Pittsburgh in 1903 on a creed of penal golf, placing nearly 210 bunkers on the property. Church Pews Bunker between the 3rd and 4th is one of the game's most famous hazards, its grass ridges laid like pews. Par 70 at roughly 7,370 yards, with narrow fairways and greens that fall away from the hole, green speeds routinely exceed 13 on the Stimpmeter. It has hosted the U.S. Open a record 10 times on a single course; J.J. Spaun won in 2025. Add three PGA Championships and five U.S. Amateurs and no American club has staged more national championships.

It has long contested the title of America's hardest course with Winged Foot. Both play par 70 with tight fairways, but Oakmont breaks players with green speed where Winged Foot uses deep rough around the greens.
