Major honours
Pinehurst is the resort complex often called the cradle of American golf. Boston businessman James Walker Tufts developed it as a health retreat in 1895; Scottish-born architect Donald Ross settled here, built No. 2 in 1907 and kept refining it for nearly 40 years. The ten-course complex centres on No. 2, par 70 at roughly 7,550 yards, famous for crowned greens that spill missed approaches off the putting surface like overturned saucers. A 2010 restoration by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore brought back sand and wiregrass in place of rough. It hosted the U.S. Open in 1999, 2005, 2014 and 2024; in 2014 men's and women's U.S. Opens were played on the same course in consecutive weeks. The USGA designated it an anchor site in 2020, booking future Opens for 2029, 2035 and beyond.
