Major honours
Shinnecock Hills stands at the institutional starting point of American golf. Founded in 1891 at the eastern tip of Long Island, it was one of five founding clubs that created the USGA in 1894. The clubhouse designed by Stanford White in 1892 remains America's oldest golf clubhouse. Willie Dunn laid out the original course; William Flynn rebuilt it into today's routing in 1931. With almost no trees, sandy terrain and Atlantic wind, it is rated the most links-like course on the American mainland. Par 70 at roughly 7,440 yards, it hosted the U.S. Open in 1896, 1986, 1995, 2004 and 2018; at the 2004 Open, the 7th green dried out so severely that officials had to water it during play, sparking fierce debate over course setup.

For decades it has been measured against National Golf Links of America, its neighbour across a fence, over which club built America's first great course. Both share Southampton's dunes and together mark the birth of American golf architecture.
