Major honours
Frank Williams and engineer Patrick Head founded the team in 1977, basing it in Grove, Oxfordshire. Clay Regazzoni took the first win at the 1979 British Grand Prix, and through the 1980s and 1990s the team accumulated nine constructors' titles and seven drivers' titles. Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve all became champions in Williams cars. The 1992 FW14B, combining active suspension, traction control and a semi-automatic gearbox, is regarded as the peak of the electronics era and delivered nine wins for Mansell that year. Frank Williams remained team principal even after a 1986 road accident left him paralysed, selling only in 2020 — an independence that was exceptional in F1 for decades. It was also this team that lost Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994. Pastor Maldonado's win in Spain in 2012 remains its last victory; since Dorilton Capital's takeover in 2020, James Vowles has been rebuilding.

The technical war with McLaren from the late 1980s through the early 1990s defined its golden age; in 1994 it clashed with Schumacher's Benetton all season, the fight going to the final round in Adelaide.
