Renault changed Formula 1 from two directions — as a constructor and as an engine supplier. It appeared at Silverstone in 1977 with the turbocharged RS01, mocked as the 'yellow teapot', but Jean-Pierre Jabouille's home win at Dijon-Prenois in 1979 was the first grand prix victory for a turbo car and set the technical direction for the next decade. After withdrawing its factory team in 1985 it focused on engines, powering Williams and Benetton dynasties, then bought Benetton in 2000 and returned as a constructor from 2002. The R25 and R26 from Enstone gave Fernando Alonso back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006, ending five years of Ferrari and Schumacher dominance. As a constructor Renault won only 35 races, but Renault-badged engines powered constructors' champions 12 times across Williams, Benetton, Renault and Red Bull. The team has raced as Alpine since 2021; development of its own power unit for 2026 rules was halted.

Alonso versus Schumacher and Ferrari in 2005 and 2006 was this team's peak. In the early 1980s it led the turbo charge against Ferrari and Brabham, though Prost missed the 1983 title by two points and never won the crown in Renault colours.
