Major honours
Italian clothing company Benetton bought Toleman in 1985 and raced under its own name from 1986, with the factory in Enstone, Oxfordshire. Gerhard Berger took the first win in Mexico in 1986, but the team's identity was made by Michael Schumacher, signed from Jordan in 1991. Schumacher won consecutive drivers' titles in 1994 and 1995; in 1995 the Renault-powered B195 ended Williams' constructors' run. 1994 was also a year of controversy — ignoring a black flag at Silverstone, a pit fire at Hockenheim, and allegations over launch-control software left on the car — and the FIA investigated the team all season. Flavio Briatore, Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne moved straight to Ferrari and formed the backbone of its 2000s dynasty. Berger's win in Germany in 1997 was the last; the team was sold to Renault in 2000.

The fight with Williams in 1994 and 1995 was fierce enough to define the team on its own. Schumacher's collision with Damon Hill at Adelaide in 1994 decided the title by one point, and bad blood carried into the following year.
