Major honours
New Zealand driver Bruce McLaren founded the team bearing his name in 1963, entered its first grand prix in 1966 and took its first win at Spa in 1968 with the founder himself at the wheel. Bruce died testing a Can-Am car at Goodwood in 1970, but the team survived. Ron Dennis joined in 1980, and the 1981 MP4/1 introduced Formula 1's first carbon-fibre monocoque, rewriting the standard for chassis engineering. The 1988 MP4/4 with Honda power won 15 of 16 races — a single-season dominance record that still stands. With nine constructors' titles, 12 drivers' titles and 189 grand prix wins, McLaren ranks second all-time behind Ferrari. Prost, Senna, Häkkinen and Hamilton all became champions here. A failed reunion with Honda from 2015 left the team struggling even to finish races, but under Andrea Stella it rebounded to reclaim the constructors' title in 2024 — its first in 26 years.

Rivalry
The external rivalry with Ferrari is the famous one, but the fight best remembered inside this team happened between teammates. Senna and Prost in the same car in 1988 and 1989 ended in two collisions at Suzuka; in 2007, Hamilton and Alonso fought each other so hard they handed the championship to Ferrari.
