Major honours
Timber merchant Ken Tyrrell built the team with Jackie Stewart, running Matra chassis in 1968 and 1969 before building its own cars from 1970. Stewart won drivers' titles in 1971 and 1973 in Tyrrells; the team took the constructors' crown in 1971. In 1976 it produced the six-wheeled P34 with four front wheels; Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler finished 1-2 at the Swedish Grand Prix — still the only grand prix win for a six-wheeled F1 car. Safety is inseparable from this team's story: Stewart's campaigns for barriers, seat belts and medical standards all started here, and after teammate François Cevert died in qualifying at Watkins Glen in 1973 Stewart cancelled his planned 100th race start and retired on the spot. Michele Alboreto's win in Detroit in 1983 was the last; the team was sold to BAR in 1998 with 23 wins on the record.
