Major honours
Alfa Romeo dominated the first two seasons of the world championship and then left. Its weapon was the supercharged 1.5-litre straight-eight 158, designed in 1937 and known as the Alfetta. Hidden during the war, it swept all six European rounds when the championship began in 1950 and Giuseppe Farina became the first world champion. The following year the 159, pushed to around 420 hp, gave Juan Manuel Fangio a second title, but enormous fuel consumption let unblown 4.5-litre Ferraris close the gap and withdrawal of government support forced Alfa out after 1951. Because the constructors' championship was not introduced until 1958, this team has no constructors' title. It returned as a factory entry from 1979 to 1985 without winning, then supplied engines to Ligier and Osella. From 2019 to 2023 the name reappeared on the grid as Sauber's title sponsor.

Rivalry
The 1951 fight with Ferrari was Formula 1's first true rivalry. Enzo Ferrari had run Alfa's racing operation before breaking away, and Ferrari ending Alfa's winning run at Silverstone that year was recorded as the pupil beating the master.
