Major honours
One of six teams added in the 1967 expansion, Pittsburgh spent its first twenty years in financial trouble and the basement. The 1984 first overall pick of Mario Lemieux changed everything; back-to-back titles followed in 1991 and 1992. Coach Bob Johnson died of brain cancer right after the 1991 win, and Scotty Bowman kept the Cup the next year. Evgeni Malkin in 2004 and Sidney Crosby in 2005 launched a second peak; the 2009 Game 7 win over Detroit avenged the previous year's loss. Back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017 were the first repeat champions of the salary-cap era. Lemieux bought the bankrupt club in 1999 and returned as a player in 2000 — owning the team he skated for.

Rivalry
The Battle of Pennsylvania with the Philadelphia Flyers is among the NHL's roughest regional feuds. The Washington Capitals rivalry, shaped by Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, defined an era.
