Major honours
Founded in the World Hockey Association in 1971, the Oilers joined the NHL in 1979 and brought 18-year-old Wayne Gretzky with them. The next decade was the sport's most explosive offensive experiment. The 446 goals in 1983–84 remain the NHL single-season team record; Gretzky scored 205 points that year, and defenceman Paul Coffey's 138 points in 1985–86 came one shy of Bobby Orr's 139. Five titles came in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990 — the last after Gretzky was traded to Los Angeles, with Mark Messier as captain. As a Western eighth seed in 2006 they reached a Game 7 Final. Connor McDavid's arrival in 2015 restored elite status; back-to-back Final losses to Florida came in 2024 and 2025. McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2024 with 42 playoff points — rare for a runner-up.
