Golf tactics are unlike those of any invasion sport because there is no opponent to react to — only a fixed problem and a probabilistic solution. Every shot is a decision under uncertainty: a player owns a dispersion pattern, the course presents penalties and rewards, and the job is to maximize expected value over 72 holes. For a century this was done by feel and inherited proverbs, many of them wrong. 'Lay up to a full wedge,' 'short-siding yourself is fine if you're aggressive,' and 'accuracy beats distance' all collapsed under data.
The revolution came from measurement. The PGA Tour's ShotLink system has laser-tracked essentially every shot since the early 2000s, and Mark Broadie's strokes gained framework converted that mountain of coordinates into a single currency: how much each shot moved a player toward or away from the hole relative to a tour baseline. The findings rewired professional strategy — distance is worth more than golfers believed, putting is worth less, and aim points should be chosen by ellipse, not by ego. Strokes gained, formalized by Columbia Business School professor Mark Broadie from PGA Tour ShotLink data, measures every shot against a baseline: the tour-average number of strokes to hole out from that distance and lie. A drive that moves a player from a 4.1-expected-strokes tee shot to a 2.9-expected-strokes approach position gains 0.2 on the field. Adopted officially by the PGA Tour for putting in 2011 and expanded to off-the-tee, approach and around-the-green categories, it replaced misleading counting stats — fairways hit, greens in regulation, total putts — with a true currency. Its central findings: approach play is the biggest separator among tour players, driving distance is worth far more than driving accuracy, and putting, while volatile week to week, explains less of long-run success than television suggests. Scheffler's mid-2020s dominance — gaining upward of 2.5 strokes per round on the field — is expressed almost entirely tee-to-green.
Course management by expected value
Modern course management treats every decision as an expected-value calculation over the player's real dispersion, not their best shot. The framework — popularized on tour by Scott Fawcett's DECADE system, which fed into Bryson DeChambeau's and Will Zalatoris's amateur dominance — starts from two facts: shot patterns are roughly normal distributions, and penalties are asymmetric. Out of bounds costs two shots, water one plus position, rough only about a quarter of a stroke. The optimal aim point therefore shades away from catastrophe and accepts cheap misses, even when that means aiming away from the flag or into the edge of a bunker's coverage. The system also kills the classic lay-up error: retreating to a 'full wedge number' surrenders more expected strokes than advancing the ball as far as safely possible, because proximity improves continuously with closeness. Discipline, not aggression or caution, is the variable.
Distance as the master variable
Broadie's data settled golf's oldest argument: distance beats accuracy, and it is not close. His analysis puts roughly 20 extra yards of driving distance at about three-quarters of a stroke per round for professionals — worth around three shots per tournament — while the fairway-versus-rough difference on an approach costs only about a quarter of a stroke. This is why the tour-average drive climbed from about 257 yards in 1980 to just over 300 by 2024, why DeChambeau's 2020 mass-and-speed experiment culminated in a six-shot US Open win at Winged Foot despite hitting under half the fairways, and why virtually every elite junior program now trains clubhead speed as a distinct athletic quality. It is also why the governing bodies moved: the December 2023 ball rollback exists precisely because the math of distance had begun to obsolete championship venues.
Green-light, red-light pins
Elite approach play is a traffic-light system. A green-light pin sits in the fat of the green with margin on all sides; a red-light pin is tucked behind a bunker or near a run-off, where the short-side region is smaller than the player's proximity circle. From 160 yards, a tour pro's average leave is around 30 feet — so the realistic outcome of any approach is a distribution the size of a living room, and the question is where to center it. Attacking a red-light pin centers the distribution over sand and short grass; playing to the safe quadrant keeps nearly all outcomes on the putting surface. The best iron players in the world — Scheffler is the modern exemplar — attack only a handful of flags per round, converting the rest into stress-free two-putts. Wind, club in hand, green firmness and tournament situation move pins between categories; ego is not a permitted input.
Short-siding and the geometry of misses
Short-siding — missing the green on the same side as the hole — is the most expensive routine error in golf. The short-sided player faces a shot with little green to work with, often over sand, and tour scrambling rates collapse accordingly: an up-and-down that succeeds well over 60% of the time from the fat side becomes closer to a coin flip or worse from the short side, and amateurs fare far worse. The tactical rule is that the miss is chosen before the shot: every approach has a correct miss side, dictated by pin position, green contours and the lie that side offers. This is also where course architecture does its work — designers like Alister MacKenzie at Augusta National and Pete Dye at Sawgrass build greens whose surrounds punish precisely the miss the pin position tempts. Reading the correct miss is as much a scoring skill as executing the shot.
The ground game and flight control
Links golf preserves a distinct tactical dialect. On firm, fast, wind-exposed courses — the Open rota above all — the aerial dart-throwing of American target golf fails, and control of trajectory and rollout takes over. The stock tools: flighted mid-irons played well below the wind, bump-and-runs with anything from wedge to 5-iron, putters from 30 yards off the green, and deliberate use of slopes as backboards and funnels. Spin becomes a liability as often as an asset, since a spinning ball in a crosswind is an uncontrolled one. Tiger Woods's 2006 Open at Hoylake is the tactical masterclass: on a baked course he hit driver once in 72 holes, plotting his way with 2-irons short of the bunkers and winning by two at 18-under. The rollback era, by softening the aerial bombardment, is expected to return some of this dialect to relevance even outside the linksland.
Wedge distances and the scoring matrix
Inside 130 yards, golf becomes a precision trade, and the modern approach is industrialized. Tour players build a wedge matrix — three or four wedges, each hit with three calibrated swing lengths, producing ten-plus reliable carry numbers at roughly 10-yard intervals, validated on launch monitors. The goal is eliminating in-between yardages, because strokes gained data shows proximity from the fairway improves steeply and continuously as distance falls: the difference between a 60-yard and 100-yard wedge shot is measured in feet of proximity, which compounds into putts. This is also why the old advice to lay up to a full wedge fails — a 47-yard shot with a calibrated half-wedge beats a full 95-yard sand wedge for nearly everyone. Spin-loft management, controlling launch and spin through ball position and face loft, is the technical layer beneath the matrix; Zach Johnson's lay-up-heavy 2007 Masters win, playing every par 5 as a three-shotter in brutal cold, remains the strategy's signature proof.
How it evolved
Golf strategy evolved in three broad phases. The classical era ran on inherited wisdom and match-play instincts: play safe, keep the ball in front of you, never short-side yourself — sound defaults encoded from experience but never tested. The Hogan-to-Nicklaus era added systematic preparation; Nicklaus's practice of charting courses and playing deliberately to yardages, radical in the 1960s, was the first widely copied pre-analytics system, and his conservative-aggressive framework — attack only when the odds justify — anticipated the data by half a century. The third phase began when ShotLink made every professional shot a data point and Broadie's strokes gained converted the data into decisions. Within a decade, tour-level strategy converged: hit driver almost everywhere, advance the ball on par 5s, aim at the middle of most greens, and treat putting streaks as variance rather than form.
The frontier now is personalization and physics. Launch monitors and biomechanical force-plate data have made speed a trainable quality rather than a gift, which keeps pressure on the distance debate even as the 2028 ball rollback claws back 13 to 15 yards from the longest hitters. Team events and simulator golf are producing new formats with genuinely different optimal strategies — TGL's shot clock and altered lies compress decision-making into seconds. And the analytics are moving from description to prescription: wind-adjusted dispersion modeling, green-reading books' successors in AI-assisted practice, and caddie tablets running live expected-value calculations in practice rounds. The direction of travel is clear — golf's tactical questions are increasingly answered before the round begins, and the residual art lies in execution under pressure, where no spreadsheet has yet reached.
