Major honours
Founded in 1931, Real Madrid is Europe's most decorated basketball club, run as the basketball division of the same multi-sport organisation as the football club, under the same name. Its 11 EuroLeague and predecessor European Cup titles are the most in Europe, with a first win in 1964 and its most recent in 2023. It has also won the Spanish league 38 times, the Copa del Rey 29 times, and the Intercontinental Cup five times. Clifford Luyk and Wayne Brabender dominated the European stage through the 1960s and 1970s, and in the late 1980s Arvydas Sabonis and Dražen Petrović both wore the jersey in succession. Its modern symbol is the youth system — after ending a 20-year EuroLeague drought in 2015, the club won again in 2018 when a 19-year-old Luka Dončić took both EuroLeague MVP and Final Four MVP, before being drafted third overall in the NBA draft that summer. Sergio Llull and Felipe Reyes each anchored the roster for well over a decade.

Rivalry
The fixture against FC Barcelona is known as El Clásico in basketball too, and it plays out in both the Spanish league and the EuroLeague. The two clubs have shared most of the Spanish league titles between them, and a single regular-season meeting can outdraw the national television audience for many finals.
