A relatively young expansion franchise founded in 1988, Miami became the league's franchise with the most clearly defined organisational culture after Pat Riley arrived as coach and president in 1995. The so-called "Heat Culture" treats body-fat management and training intensity almost like contractual obligations, and it's directly tied to the franchise's knack for developing undrafted players into starters. Its first title came in 2006, when Dwyane Wade averaged 34.7 points in the Finals to erase an 0-2 deficit with four straight wins. The 2010 arrival of LeBron James and Chris Bosh was the biggest event in NBA free-agency history, and that trio reached four straight Finals, winning in 2012 and 2013. Since then, Miami has repeatedly reached the Finals from low seeds — as a 5-seed in 2020, and in 2023 as an 8-seed that went through the play-in tournament to win the East, only the second time an 8-seed has reached the Finals in NBA history.

Miami clashed with the New York Knicks in four straight playoff series in the late 1990s, carrying the friction from Pat Riley's departure from New York onto the court. Since the 2010s, the recurring rival in the Eastern Conference finals has been the Boston Celtics.
