Major honours
Founded in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals and winners of a first title in 1955, the franchise moved to Philadelphia in 1963 and took its current name. Its history runs through three dominant big men. The 1966-67 team, led by Wilt Chamberlain, went 68-13 — the best winning percentage of its era — and snapped the Celtics' streak of eight straight titles. Julius Erving, who joined via the 1976 ABA merger, rewrote what the wing position could be, and Moses Malone, acquired from Houston in 1982, supplied the final piece. In the 1983 playoffs the team went 12-1 across 13 games and swept the Lakers in the Finals. Charles Barkley and Allen Iverson each defined an era after that, with Iverson leading the team to the Finals alongside an MVP season in 2001. The sweeping rebuild of the 2010s — "the Process" — produced Joel Embiid, who became the franchise's first MVP as a Cameroon-born player in 2023.

Philadelphia met the Boston Celtics in three straight Eastern Conference finals from 1980 to 1982, blowing a 3-1 series lead in 1981 to lose. The 1983 title settled the score for those three years of frustration.
