Major honours
A multi-sport club in Athens that founded its basketball section in 1919, Panathinaikos' seven EuroLeague titles rank third in Europe behind Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow. It won its first European title in 1996 under coach Božidar Maljković, with Dominique Wilkins as its headline player. Coach Željko Obradović then arrived and added five more EuroLeague titles in 2000, 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2011 — his nine career EuroLeague titles as a coach remain the most in history. Dimitris Diamantidis was the emblem of that era, winning EuroLeague Defensive Player of the Year five times. The club has won the Greek league 40 times and the Greek Cup 22 times, and set a world record with 27 straight seasons winning some form of title from 1995-96 to 2021-22. In 2024, under coach Ergin Ataman, Panathinaikos beat Real Madrid 95-80 in the Berlin Final Four to reclaim a seventh European title after a 13-year wait.

Rivalry
The "derby of the eternal enemies" against cross-town rival Olympiacos is regarded as the fiercest fixture in European club basketball. The two sides met in the EuroLeague Final Four in both 2009 and 2011, and they meet repeatedly in domestic league finals as well.
