Baseball tactics operate on two timescales. Pitch to pitch, the game is a sequencing duel: the pitcher manipulates speed, movement, and location to disrupt a hitter whose decision window is under a quarter of a second. Game to game, it is a resource-allocation problem — 27 outs on offense, roughly 146 pitches of quality arm strength per starter, and a bullpen whose best reliever must be spent at the moment of maximum leverage rather than by rote in the ninth inning. The teams that win consistently are the ones that price those resources correctly.

The analytics movement did not invent baseball strategy; it audited it. Sacrifice bunts, pitching to the save statistic, and batting-order superstitions all failed the audit, while unglamorous skills — taking walks, framing borderline pitches, positioning fielders where the ball is actually hit — turned out to be worth wins. The 2023 rule changes were, in effect, the league legislating against its own optimizations: banning the shift and adding a pitch clock because perfectly rational tactics had made the product slower and more static. Understanding modern baseball means understanding both the optimization and the backlash.

Infield shift vs a left-handed pull hitter (pre-2023)

The alignment that got legislated out of the game. Batted-ball data showed that extreme pull hitters — typically left-handed power bats — sent 80 percent or more of their ground balls to the right side, so teams stationed three infielders there: the second baseman retreated into shallow right field, the shortstop moved to the right of second base, and the third baseman slid over to conventional shortstop territory, conceding a bunt or an opposite-field slap most sluggers would not attempt. The outfield rotated toward right-center in sympathy. Shifts of this type roughly tripled between 2016 and 2022, and league batting average on ground balls sank with them. From 2023, MLB requires two infielders on each side of second base with all four on the infield dirt at the pitch, which restored roughly a dozen points of batting average to left-handed pull hitters in the first season alone.

The wheel play against a sacrifice bunt

A high-risk rotation used with a runner on second and an obvious bunt situation, usually late in a close game. As the pitcher delivers, both corner infielders charge hard toward the plate to field the bunt as quickly as possible, the shortstop sprints to cover third base — the bag the runner is trying to reach — and the second baseman rotates across to cover first for the throw. Executed cleanly, the defense forces the lead runner at third and erases the sacrifice entirely; executed late, or against a hitter who fakes the bunt and slashes at the pitch, it leaves the entire left side of the infield unguarded. The wheel play is a compressed lesson in baseball defense: every alignment is a wager on what the offense will do, and the price of a wrong guess is paid in open grass.

No-doubles defense

The standard late-inning alignment when protecting a lead of one or two runs, typically from the seventh inning on. All three outfielders retreat 20 to 30 feet deeper than normal and the corner outfielders pinch toward the foul lines, while the first and third basemen guard their lines as well. The explicit trade is singles for doubles: the defense concedes soft hits dropping in front of the outfielders because a single merely puts a runner on first, while a ball in the gap or down the line puts the tying run in scoring position. Win-expectancy math supports the convention — with two outs and a two-run lead in the ninth, a double is several times more damaging than a single. The alignment's weakness is a team that strings together contact, which is exactly the offense the 2023 rules were designed to revive.

Elite pitching is deception engineering. Because a hitter must commit to a swing when the ball is roughly 25 feet from the plate, two pitches that travel through the same 'tunnel' to that decision point and then diverge — a four-seam fastball riding to the top of the zone and a curveball breaking beneath it, or a slider and two-seamer splitting in opposite directions from one apparent trajectory — are individually harder to hit than either pitch in isolation. Sequencing adds the memory game: setting up a changeup by establishing the fastball, altering perceived velocity by working inside then away. Statcast's release-point and movement data turned tunneling from clubhouse folklore into a design specification, and modern pitching labs now build repertoires explicitly around pitch pairs that mirror each other's spin axes.

The times-through-the-order penalty

Hitters improve measurably with each look at the same pitcher: league-wide, opposing batters gain roughly 20 to 25 points of OPS the second time through the lineup and again the third time, an effect driven by pitch recognition and timing rather than pitcher fatigue alone. This single, robust finding restructured the sport. Starters averaged nearly seven innings per start in the 1970s and barely five by the early 2020s; managers now pull effective pitchers at 85 pitches on principle, and October bullpen games are routine. The Tampa Bay Rays weaponized the logic completely in May 2018 by starting reliever Sergio Romo — the first modern 'opener' — so the nominal starter could begin his outing against the weaker bottom of the order and avoid facing the top a third time.

Sabermetrics: from OBP to WAR

Bill James began self-publishing his Baseball Abstracts in 1977 with a simple premise: test the sport's folk wisdom against evidence. The findings compounded. On-base percentage predicts run scoring far better than batting average because outs, not hits, are the binding constraint on an inning. Fielding-independent pitching (FIP) showed that pitchers control strikeouts, walks, and home runs far more than the fate of balls in play. Wins Above Replacement (WAR) rolls hitting, baserunning, defense, and position scarcity into one currency, enabling honest comparison of a slugging first baseman with a defensive wizard at shortstop. The 2002 Oakland Athletics — 103 wins, a record 20-game streak, a bottom-five payroll — proved the market inefficiency was exploitable, and within fifteen years every front office employed more analysts than scouts had once existed.

Three true outcomes and the launch-angle revolution

A 'three true outcomes' plate appearance ends in a homer, walk, or strikeout — no fielders involved. Their combined share of plate appearances climbed steadily for three decades as hitters learned what the data taught: a ball hit at 95-plus mph at a launch angle between 10 and 30 degrees is the most valuable event in the sport, and a ground ball is close to worthless against optimized defenses. Swing planes steepened accordingly — mid-2010s converts like Josh Donaldson and J.D. Martinez rebuilt careers on the uppercut — and MLB hit an all-time record 6,776 home runs in 2019 while strikeouts exceeded hits league-wide for the first time in 2018. The aesthetic cost of this rational style, long stretches without a ball in play, is precisely what the 2023 rule package was engineered to counteract.

Small ball and the revived running game

Small ball — bunting runners along, hitting behind runners, stealing bases, squeezing home a run — dominated the dead-ball era and never disappeared in Japan and Korea, where one-run strategies remain orthodox. Sabermetrics demoted it in MLB: a sacrifice bunt usually lowers run expectancy because it spends the offense's scarcest resource, an out, to advance one base. But the 2023 rules re-priced aggression on the bases specifically. Roster construction adapted: the premium shifted to relievers with reverse-split weapons, like a changeup that neutralizes opposite-handed bats, rather than sidearmers who dominate only their own side.

Catcher framing and strike-zone theft

Receiving a borderline pitch with a quiet glove, subtly rounding it into the zone, converts balls to strikes — and each stolen strike is worth about an eighth of a run in count leverage. When pitch-tracking data made framing measurable around 2011, the results were startling: the best receivers, such as Jose Molina and later Tyler Flowers, were worth 15 to 25 runs a season with a skill invisible to traditional statistics, while some strong-armed catchers were quietly costing their teams wins. Framing valuations reshaped the catching market almost overnight and drove the now-ubiquitous one-knee receiving stance, which improves presentation of low pitches. The skill's twilight is scheduled: as the automated ball-strike challenge system arrives in 2026, framing's value shrinks with every pitch a challenge can overturn, and catcher evaluation is already tilting back toward blocking, throwing, and game-calling.

How it evolved

Tactical history runs in long arcs of optimization and correction. Dead-ball 'inside baseball' — bunts, steals, spitballs — was annihilated by Ruth's demonstration that the home run outscored the manufactured run. The integration era added speed and athleticism; the 1970s and 1980s balanced turf-driven speed games against power; and the analytics era optimized ruthlessly for true outcomes, defensive positioning, and bullpen specialization. Each optimization worked, and each made the game slower and more static until the league intervened — lowering the mound in 1969, and in 2023 restricting the shift, adding the clock, and enlarging the bases to legislate athleticism back onto the field.

The next arc is already visible. The automated ball-strike challenge system arrives in MLB in 2026, which will shrink framing value and push catcher development toward run prevention elsewhere. Biomechanics labs and bat-tracking data (public since 2024) are individualizing swing and pitch design the way pitching labs individualized repertoires a decade ago. And the sport's central unsolved problem is now physiological: pitchers optimized for maximum velocity and spin break at unprecedented rates, with roughly a third of major league pitchers having undergone elbow reconstruction. The team that solves durability — keeping 97 mph on the field for 180 innings — will own the next inefficiency.
