The most important number in modern tennis tactics is this: roughly 70 percent of professional points end within the first four shots. Strategy analyst Craig O'Shannessy's work on Grand Slam data reframed how the sport understands itself — tennis is not primarily a rallying game but a first-strike game, and the serve, the return, and the shot immediately after each ('serve +1' and 'return +1') decide most matches. Practice courts across the tour now reflect this, with players drilling short, scripted patterns far more than open rallying.

Layered on top of first-strike tennis is geometry. Every ball a player hits changes the set of angles available to the opponent, and elite movement is less about raw speed than about recovering to the position that bisects the opponent's best options. The server (S) hits a slice serve wide to the deuce court, landing near the sideline (T). This drags the returner (R) off the court — often two metres beyond the singles line — and the geometry does the rest: the returner's reply must travel back across the full width of the court, giving the server time to step around into the vacated space (+1) and drive a forehand into the open court on the opposite side. The crucial detail is that the server commits to the +1 position before seeing the return; the pattern is scripted, not reactive. Statistically, servers win an outsized share of points when the first serve lands within a metre of a sideline, which is why placement, not raw speed, correlates best with service games held.

Baseline grinder vs serve-and-volleyer

Two philosophies on one court. The modern baseliner (B) camps one to three metres behind the baseline, buying time to load full swings on every ball — the default stance of the polyester-string era. The serve-and-volleyer (V) instead follows the serve forward, aiming to make the first volley from just inside the service line before the returner (R) can find their range. The volleyer's problem is the modern dipping pass: poly strings let returners hit heavy topspin at the volleyer's shoelaces, which is why serve-and-volley collapsed from the default grass-court tactic of the 1990s — Sampras and Rafter followed virtually every first serve in — to a single-digit share of Wimbledon points today. But as a surprise weapon it remains lethal precisely because returners now stand so deep; a serve-and-volley point against a returner positioned five metres back concedes them a nearly impossible passing angle and travel time.

Return position extremes: deep vs on the rise

Where to stand for the return is the clearest tactical divide in today's game. The deep returner (D) — the position Daniil Medvedev made famous, sometimes five or six metres behind the baseline — trades court position for time, getting almost every serve back in play and turning the point into a rally, where superior fitness and consistency can take over. The aggressive returner (A) stands on or inside the baseline, taking the serve on the rise to steal time from the server (S), attack the server's +1 plan before it forms, and hold their own court position. Roger Federer pushed this to its extreme with the SABR ('Sneak Attack By Roger'), chipping second-serve returns from inside the service line. Each choice creates a counter: servers beat deep returners with wide angles and drop shots into the acres of vacated forecourt, and beat aggressive returners with heavy kick serves that climb above shoulder height too quickly to control.

Rally geometry: the cross-court default and the recovery bisector

Why do professionals hit cross-court so much? Three reasons of pure geometry: the court is 2.7 metres longer on the diagonal, the net is 15 centimetres lower in the middle, and a cross-court ball returns toward your own position. Here the hitter (A) strikes a forehand from near the right sideline to the opponent's corner (O). The critical decision is where A recovers to — and it is not the centre of the court. The correct spot (X) bisects the opponent's two best replies: the cross-court angle and the down-the-line drive. Because the cross-court reply carries more angle, the bisector sits noticeably off-centre, toward the side A just hit from. Players who recover to the centre mark are systematically wrong-footed; players who recover to the bisector appear 'fast' without being faster. Changing direction down the line — breaking the cross-court pattern — is reserved for short balls and strike positions, because it must cross the higher part of the net into a shorter court while surrendering the geometric safety of the diagonal.

Serve +1 (first-strike tennis)

The serve is the only closed skill in tennis — the one shot not dictated by an opponent — and elite players script the shot that follows it. A 'serve +1' pattern pairs a serve location with a pre-planned next ball: wide serve, forehand to the open court; body serve, forehand behind the returner; T serve, short angle. Because roughly 70 percent of points end within four shots, winning the first-strike phase matters more than winning rallies. This is why first-serve percentage is often a deceptive statistic: a 55 percent first-serve day with precise placement into the corners typically beats a 70 percent day of safe serves down the middle, since central serves hand the returner a neutral start. Djokovic's late-career service improvement — he became one of the most efficient +1 players in the sport without elite serve speed — is the canonical demonstration that placement plus a scripted next ball beats power.

The return battle

The return is the shot that most separates the all-time greats from the merely excellent. Andre Agassi built a Hall of Fame career on taking the serve early; Djokovic turned the return into a neutralising weapon so reliable that opponents felt broken before deuce. Modern returners choose between stealing time (standing on the baseline, blocking the ball back deep, denying the server their +1 forehand) and buying time (retreating far behind the baseline, as Medvedev and Nadal often did, to put every serve back in play). Depth matters more than pace: a return landing within two metres of the baseline usually resets the point to neutral regardless of speed, while a short return — even a fast one — invites the server's forehand. On second serves, the modern trend is unambiguous aggression: top players now step in and treat the second-serve return as the first strike of their own.

Surface physics and surface tactics

Tennis is three different sports sharing a rulebook. Clay slows the ball and kicks it high, rewarding heavy topspin, sliding defence, and patient point construction — Nadal's forehand, averaging around 3,200 revolutions per minute, bounced above opponents' shoulders in Paris, which is a major reason he went 112-4 at Roland Garros. Grass skids low and fast, shortening rallies, rewarding the slice that stays below knee height, flat hitting, and serve dominance; movement itself must be relearned, with shorter steps and no sliding into full stretch. Hard courts sit between the extremes and give a true, predictable bounce, which is why they reward the most complete players. Court positioning and the recovery bisector

Elite movement is mostly elite mathematics. After every shot, the correct recovery position is not the centre of the court but the point that bisects the angle of the opponent's two best possible replies — which shifts with every ball. Hit a sharp cross-court angle and the bisector moves well off-centre; pin a deep ball down the middle and it sits near the centre mark, which is precisely why the 'boring' deep middle ball is a favourite neutralising shot: it minimises the opponent's angles and simplifies your own recovery. Court depth is the second axis: playing from inside the baseline cuts opponent reaction time and opens drop-shot and angle options, while retreating buys time at the cost of surrendering those same options to the opponent. The best modern players — Djokovic above all — are distinguished less by speed than by how rarely they are caught recovering to the wrong spot.

Rally tolerance and pattern construction

Rally tolerance is a player's willingness and ability to stay in a neutral exchange without forcing a low-percentage shot — and knowing your own number relative to the opponent's is core match strategy. Against a higher-tolerance opponent, you must shorten points: serve bigger, take returns earlier, come forward. Against a lower-tolerance opponent, simply extending rallies past four or five shots manufactures errors. Construction within rallies follows stable percentages: cross-court is the default (longer court, lower net, safer recovery), and direction changes down the line are reserved for balls received short or in a strike zone, because changing direction on a deep, heavy ball is statistically one of the most error-prone decisions in tennis. The classic clay pattern — repeated heavy cross-court forehands into the backhand corner until a short reply allows the inside-out or down-the-line strike — is the sport's oldest algorithm, and it still wins majors.

Transition and net play in the poly era

Polyester strings killed serve-and-volley as a default strategy — dipping topspin passes made the low first volley a losing proposition — but they did not kill the net. Today's tour actually rewards net play more than its reputation suggests: net-approach points are won at well over 60 percent by most top players, because approaches now come off huge groundstrokes that leave opponents stretched, rather than off serves that give returners a clean look. The modern transition game is opportunistic: attack behind a heavy ball into a corner, close in two steps, and finish with a first volley played from around the service line rather than tight to the net. Carlos Alcaraz embodies the synthesis — a baseline power player who serve-and-volleys as a surprise, uses drop volleys, and treats the forecourt as a finishing zone. The tactical rule of the era: the net is no longer a place to camp, but it remains the most efficient place to end a point you have already won from the baseline.

The drop shot renaissance

For two decades the drop shot was a low-percentage indulgence; deep return positioning brought it roaring back. When returners stand five metres behind the baseline, the space in front of them becomes the largest unguarded area on the court, and players like Alcaraz weaponised it — his forehand drop shot, disguised until the last tenth of a second behind an identical backswing to his drive, is arguably the most effective single shot introduced to the men's game in the 2020s. The modern drop shot is not a defensive improvisation but a scripted play: it works best off a short mid-court ball, aimed cross-court (the shorter distance keeps it lower over the net), and ideally after a sequence of deep drives has pushed the opponent's base position back. Its second-order effect is as valuable as the winners it produces: once threatened, opponents creep forward, and the same deep drives that set up the drop shot start rushing past them.

How it evolved

Tactical history in tennis is technology history with a lag. Wooden racquets and grass at three of the four majors made the twentieth century a net-rushing era: from the Doherty brothers to Sampras, the orthodoxy held that important points were won at the net. Graphite frames in the 1980s added power; polyester strings after Kuerten's 1997 Roland Garros win added control over that power, and the combination inverted a century of doctrine within roughly five years. By the mid-2000s the tour had homogenised toward a universal baseline game — Wimbledon's slower courts and heavier balls saw its last serve-and-volley champion in 2001 (Ivanisevic) and its first baseline-only final in 2002, and every major since has been won primarily from the back of the court.

The current cycle is being driven by data rather than equipment. First-strike analytics shifted practice priorities to serve +1 and return +1 patterns; tracking data exposed the value of return depth, net approaches and the drop shot; and the extreme deep-return position spawned its own counters, in a live tactical arms race visible from season to season. The Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry embodies the synthesis: Sinner representing the perfected linear baseline game — flat, early, relentless depth — and Alcaraz the variety counter-model of drop shots, net rushes and pace changes.
