How it unfolded
Heading into this match, Japan's all-time World Cup record was a single win in 24 years, including a 17-145 loss to New Zealand in 1995. Coach Eddie Jones had rebuilt the team around dawn training sessions, a strengthened scrum and faster breakdown work, and now faced two-time champion South Africa. Japan held its own from the first whistle. Fullback Ayumu Goromaru accounted for 24 points alone, with a try, two conversions and five penalties. South Africa pulled ahead on four tries, but Japan kept clawing back, and with the score 32-29 down in the closing seconds, Japan won a penalty on the left of South Africa's 22. A kick at goal would have secured a draw. Captain Michael Leitch instead chose a scrum — against the instruction relayed from the bench. Japan strung together several phases, moving the ball from right to left, until replacement winger Karne Hesketh dove over in the left corner in the final moment. 34-32. A crowd of 29,290 remained in the stadium to see it. Japan went on to win three matches in the tournament yet still finished third in its pool, becoming the first team ever to do so and miss the quarterfinal.
