How it unfolded
Medal-round opener. The Soviets were four-time defending Olympic champions and had beaten this U.S. team 10–3 in an exhibition at Madison Square Garden two weeks earlier. Herb Brooks's squad averaged 21 years old — the youngest in the tournament. The U.S. answered two Soviet leads; Mark Johnson tied it 2–2 with one second left in the first period. Viktor Tikhonov then pulled Tretiak for Vladimir Myshkin — a decision Tikhonov later called his worst mistake. The Soviets led 3–2 after two. Johnson tied it on a power play at 8:39 of the third; captain Mike Eruzione scored from the slot at exactly ten minutes. Jim Craig made 36 saves on 39 Soviet shots; the U.S. managed sixteen. Al Michaels asked on ABC whether you believed in miracles. The U.S. beat Finland 4–2 two days later for gold.
Why it still matters
At the Cold War's chilliest moment, college amateurs beating the world's best state-run system became America's defining sports story. Youth registration surged afterward and the NHL's U.S. footprint — including the Sun Belt — owes much to that night. For the Soviets it accelerated generational change.
