How it unfolded
Lauda led the championship 68-65 going into the finale. Torrential rain flooded Fuji; spray from the car ahead made visibility impossible. The start was delayed by about an hour and 40 minutes before proceeding. Hunt led early; Lauda pulled into the pits after two laps and retired, deciding the conditions were undriveable — only three months after nearly dying in the Nürburgring fire. He never reversed that call. When the rain eased, Hunt's wet tyres failed; a puncture on lap 68 dropped him to fifth, and he passed Clay Regazzoni and Alan Jones in the final two laps to finish third. Mario Andretti won for Lotus, Patrick Depailler was second for Tyrrell. Hunt did not realise he was champion and was still angry when his team told him. The final score was 69-68.
Why it still matters
This was the first time Formula 1 put the question of how to handle danger in front of a mass audience. Lauda's withdrawal drew heavy criticism at the time but established the precedent that a driver may set his own limit — logic that feeds into red flags and stoppages today. The one-point finish and the contrast between the two men became the sport's best-known story.
